April 2007

We're adding a new swim in 2007.  A POOL swim at the site that hosted the 2005 and 2007 Jr. Pan Pacific Championships: Kihei Aquatic Center on Maui.  This will be a 25m (scm) meet starting late Sunday as a way to make this a swimming weekend without having to get on a plane.

We finally had all the components shipped or created; and we tested our wristband electronic timing today.  It works great ... and easily.  You'll be given a tyvek wristband with a barcode on it before the race.  When crossing the finish line, a person will scan the barcode on your wristband.  Please hold your hand out and as steady as possible for the scan.  It scans very easily ... try to show the barcode side to the person with the scanner for the fastest time.  In case of error, there are manual backups to check through the long chute.  And a sports drink or cold water in cups at the end of the chute/gauntlet.

We changed the 1 mile course as of today.  Check the new graphs and maps.  We did this to give the 1 mile swimmers the opportunity to do the arch.  We will poll all 1-mile swimmers before the race to verify there are no objects.  If ALL participants who show up agree, we'll take 1 minute off the time for those that do the arch ... if not, we'll stick with the race notice as stated.

Electronic Timing this year.  As of July 28th, we have selected an electronic timing method - a barcode on a wristband you will collect when you register for the race.  We will have a longer chute this year for the finish.  There will be a large red time clock when you cross the line (and you will be videoed crossing), and there will be a person with a wireless barcode reader to record your crossing ... and your official the time will be calculated from there.  As a backup, there will also be two teams to record your number and time.  After you pass these backup timers, you must continue through the chute until we check for your "arch token".

We are keeping the arch and will have a SCUBA diver there in case of emergency - and perhaps to hand out your "arch token".

Swimmers will still get a time-off benefit for swimming through "the arch", but only 1 minute this year.  In evaluating times throughout the field, it looks like 50 seconds was close to the average extra time it took.

June 7, 2006.  Created 'Aumakua Web Site.  Adobe Entry form available on site to download, fill out, and print.
