What is the arch?

The arch is something that makes this ocean swim unique.  As a comparison, pool competition is like a velodrome for bicycle racing, or the track for running; normal ocean swims are like road races for bikes, or cross country running; adding a 9-13' deep and 6-8' wide arch in the middle of the swim is like doing a little off-road biking, off-road running, or even the steeplechase.  You get 1 minute off your time for diving through the arch.  Any swimmer who dives through the arch gets a token to show at the finish for the 1-minute "credit".  (From the first year, it appears by examining results that swimmers "lost" approx 50 seconds by diving through the arch.)  A scuba diver will be there at the arch to monitor swimmers for safety, in addition to a lifeguard at the surface and a kayaker.

There are cautions for the arch about...

  • You'll be tired when you dive after 2 miles of swimming.  You may or may NOT benefit from doing this.

  • Diving to depth (especially when tired) can hurt your ears.  Do NOT do this if you aren't practiced in diving to a depth of 9-13' when tired.

  • Diving to depth can pressurize your goggles (feels like your eyeballs are squeezed, but really hard goggles hold air which compresses under pressure "pulling" on your eyes) - this can blur your vision even through goggles.

  • You may scrape your skin on the coral.
